Why your auto and home policies don't cover the toys, and what does.
People assume the boat is on the homeowners policy and the bike is on the auto policy. Neither is true in any useful way: homeowners policies cap watercraft at tiny limits and exclude most liability, and auto policies don't cover motorcycles at all. Each toy needs its own coverage, written for how it's actually used.
Motorcycles in Illinois
Illinois requires the same 25/50/20 liability on a motorcycle as on a car, plus uninsured motorist coverage. The practical policy goes further: higher UM limits (riders are the ones who get hurt), accessories and custom parts (exhaust, bags, seats, paint, usually a few thousand dollars beyond the base value), riding gear, and roadside coverage that sends a flatbed instead of a hook. Seasonal riders in all five states can keep comprehensive year-round and reduce liability in winter, ask about lay-up options.
Boats and personal watercraft
Illinois doesn't mandate boat insurance, but marinas and lenders generally do. A boat policy covers hull and motor (agreed value or actual cash value, we'll explain the difference), on-water liability for injuries and damage to other boats and docks, medical payments for passengers, towing on the water, the trailer, and fishing or watersports gear. If you're on the watn, on-water liability isn't optional in practice.
Heads up: agreed value vs. actual cash value
On a boat, an RV or a classic bike, actual cash value pays what it's worth today, depreciated. Agreed value pays the number you and the carrier set when the policy is written, no depreciation argument at claim time. It costs a little more and it's usually worth it on anything you'd be upset to replace at book value.
RVs, travel trailers and campers
A motorhome needs its own auto-style liability plus physical damage; a towed trailer needs physical damage and contents while the tow vehicle's liability extends to it on the road. Both benefit from personal effects coverage (the stuff inside), vacation liability (a campsite injury), emergency expense coverage when a breakdown strands you, and, for full-timers, a policy written like a home. Foremost is one of the strongest RV carriers in the country, and it's in the Farmers family.
ATVs, UTVs, golf carts and snowmobiles
Off-road vehicles are excluded from auto policies and barely covered by homeowners. A dedicated policy covers physical damage, liability (including on trails and public land where it's required), and accessories like plows and winches. Snowmobiles can carry seasonal coverage; golf carts in all five states communities need liability more than most owners realize.
